Review by Mary Herman

Visit Penang #18 (Apr-May 1997) Issue

Penang now has a CD-ROM to boast about as a travel destination. GeoVision’s George and Shanti Lee’s creation encapsulates the best and the latest of Penang for the current or soon-to-be tourist, especially those planning their next vacation by flipping through an ever growing file of CD-ROM ‘brochures.’

For Penang, Pearl of the Orient, GeoVision photographed, visited, telephoned, promoted, edited and did everything else necessary to bring us an excellent guide. In its final form, Penang, Pearl of the Orient, contains 18 digitized videos, complete with 5 slide shows, 70 movie files and more than 1,000 photographic and animation images.

This interactive multimedia presentation has three hours of viewing time and up to 120 pages of information, all at the disposal of the viewer from easy-to-follow menu.

There are some extras and treats as well, such as an audio Bahasa Malaysia tutorial and local recipes.

Penang, Pearl of the Orient, is the second in the Glimpses of Malaysia CD-ROM Series. GeoVision’s first project was a CD-ROM on Kelantan State, where they lived for ten years. George told me that he first got the idea to produce CD-ROMs of Malaysia more than five years ago when they were in San Jose, California. In fact, GeoVision contracted professional help from the US for their CD-ROM productions.

Penang, Pearl of the Orient is excellently produced, with fantastic photos and animation, like the food section which starts out with a dazzling, visual of flaming clay pot, a local culinary favourite. It has just been released for distribution to Internet Shopping Malls, travel and tourism offices and agencies, libraries and hotels.

Customised Corporate Promotion Packages are available and Internet-linked viewers can look forward to receiving information on upcoming events and updates.

It was a full-time, year-long project, "something like having a baby" said George, but they couldn’t have done it alone.

Credit also goes to a host of photographers, freelance writers, musicians, as well as the Tourism Division of The Penang Development Corporation (PDC) and Dato’ Kee of the Penang State Tourism Committee for their contributions to this project.

As for George and Shanti-are they among the entrepreneurs of Penang?

"I wouldn’t call myself that. Just willing to wear different hats and trying anything, once," says George.

GeoVision, Penang’s hats are off to you!
