Kelantan, The Land
of Lightning

DO'S
AND DONT'S
|
The people of Kelantan are renowned for their
tolerance and hospitality and we are sure you will enjoy
your stay with us here. There are a few simple guidelines
to ensure your peasant stay with us :
Kelantan people have deep respect for their Sultan, so it
is advisable not to show any disrespect towards the Royalty.
Muslim traditions are strongly upheld. Enter the Mosque
only with the permission of the caretaker. When visiting
a mosque, dress neatly and remove your shoes before entering.
Similarly, most Buddhist temples require the removal of
shoes. Look out for signs. Do not climb on any of the images
of Buddha and do not touch a monk.
Do not point your foot at another person or indicate an
object. It is considered very rude. Likewise, do not touch
a person on the head.
Don't lose your temper. It won't get you anywhere and Kelantanese
consider it poor manners.
Smoking is prohibited in almost all air conditioned public
places. The law provides a fine of up to RM 5000 for offenders.
Littering is an offence for which you
can be fined up to RM 500.
Drug trafficking carries serious penalties,
including heavy fines and prison sentences. Drug traffickers
can expect severe punishment including mandatory death sentence.
Always keep valuables and large amounts of cash in the hotel
safe. This service is free.
Always keep your room door locked. Allow entry only to people
you know or are expecting, otherwise ask the hotel reception
to identify the caller. Don't give your room number to strangers.
While in town or public places, visitors should be properly
attired. Do not wear shorts or go braless, as people in
Kelantan find that uncultured and offensive.
While at the beach, do not leave your valuables unattended
and do not bathe in the nude.
