Kelantan, The Land of Lightning

The Kijang
The Kijang, aka, common barking deer or Indian muntjac, belongs to the "cervidae" family. It is a native of Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo, India and Thailand.

Its height ranges from 49cm (female) to 57cm (male). Its weight ranges from 14 kg (female) to16 kg (male).

This brown coloured animal is called a barking deer because, when alarmed or during breeding season, lets out a sound like a sharp dog's bark and its tail is held up as a signal of alarm.

A male Kijang has antlers of about 5 inches long. It emerges from its long hairy pedicles which extends down from each side of the face.

The antlers are shed in May or June each year.

Its diet consist of fallen leaves, grass, fruits, and tender shoots.

The life span of a Kijang is about ten years.
