One extremely interesting daytrip you can make from Kota Bharu is to the islands at the mouth of the Kelantan River, where it meets the South China Sea. These islands are easily accessible from Sg. Pinang by small boats that act as "watertaxis".

The fares are quite inexpensive and these islands provide a diversion from the hustle and bustle of Kota Bharu. This short boat ride of approx. 1/2 hour is like stepping back into time. These islands have no road access and the only means of transportation in and out is by boat. People here mostly live the traditional Kampung lifestyle and smile and wave at visitors.

 

There are a couple of small kampungs located here, and even a typical Malaysian school. Majority of the population is involved in fishing of one sort or another, and as a result you will often find families sitting in the shade of palm trees repairing nets, maintaining the boats, or sorting the days catch. There are several small areas where you will see oil palm trees being cultivated and almost every house has a small garden plot of some sort. Take some time to explore these islands and experience a little of the past.

It would be a good idea to bring water and your own food as you travel here, as everything must be brought in by boat and the availability of these items may be non-existant.

 

These islands are a fine example of Kelantan coastal rural life with almost every family owning a boat of some sort. Some are the small canoes used as a family vehicle, others are the brightly painted fishing boats Kelantan is famous for.

As in any developing country, things change rapidly and indeed there are plans to build a resort complete with golf course on these islands. More people will be able to share the beauty and serenity these islands offer.
